LumaDent’s Origins with DentalTown

LumaDent has a proud and long-standing relationship with DentalTown. Our founder and CEO, Dr. Don Ton, has been a member of the forums since 2001. It was here that his professional dental journey experienced a major breakthrough, eventually leading him to create the company now known as LumaDent.

Dr. Ton’s passion for people was evident in some of the earliest posts on the forums. He quickly became well known in the online community for helping practice owners remodel their office spaces at a fraction of the typical cost. While many dental professionals were spending up to $60,000 on office renovations, Dr. Ton demonstrated how this could be achieved for as little as $5,000 using IKEA products. The advice given in his posts covered which cabinets to purchase, how to make the necessary cuts, and the entire installation process from start to finish. His practical and budget-friendly solutions resonated with many dentists eager to upgrade their practices without breaking the bank.

Dr. Ton's willingness to share his knowledge and learn from the community built his reputation. He took what he learned from his discussions and combined it with his passion for solving problems, to address the high costs of dental equipment. When his wife's headlamp broke, a replacement was priced at $1,200. As a dentist, she needed a more affordable solution not only for herself but also for her team. Dr. Ton used his electrical engineering background to design an affordable alternative. He created a new headlight using off-the-shelf components from his local Lowes. Dr. Ton then shared this experience with the DentalTown forum.

After posting his prototype headlight on DentalTown, Dr. Ton received an overwhelming response from dentists interested in his cost-effective solution. This experience, driven by his passion for people and problem-solving, sparked the creation of LumaDent, a company created to solve the market issue of overpriced headlights. The first official LumaDent sale was actually made by a DentalTown member from Vancouver, Canada.

Dr. Ton founded LumaDent with the goal of answering the question, "How can this product be used in a clinical setting and how can this product improve clinical skill?" Under Dr. Ton’s leadership, LumaDent continues to thrive, always seeking innovative ways to serve dental professionals and uphold the values that started on DentalTown. With these values, Dr. Ton is dedicated to giving back to the DentalTown community, which played a crucial role in LumaDent’s early success and growth. Even today, LumaDent offers an exclusive discount for all DentalTown members.
